5.3 million tons of plastic not recycled each year: producers

Mexico City. Due to the lack of recycling infrastructure, around 5.3 million tons of plastic waste are thrown away annually in the country, acknowledged the president of the National Association of Plastics Industries, José del Cueto.

It is one of the most dynamic activities, he said, to the extent that the Ethylene XXI project under construction by Braskem and Idesa will not compensate imports.

He pointed out that last year only 780,000 tons of plastic were recycled in the country, representing 13 percent of a national consumption of 6.1 million tons that year.

In view of the current situation of plastic recycling, Del Cueto said that a clear policy is required for the installation of new recycling plants, a broader ecological awareness among consumers, extending to the whole country the obligation to separate garbage, as well as the design of packaging destined for recycling.
