International bridges in Mexico, fundamental in logistics processes

The borders shared by Mexico and the United States are vital in their processes, as they are a gateway to global consumption, through 56 international bridges that cover the entire territory between both nations, across 10 states, four of which are located on the U.S. side, corresponding to California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, and the remaining, on the Mexican side, in Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas.

It is a 3,153 kilometer long strip of land, considered the fourth largest economy in the world, which begins on the Mexican side in Baja California, with nine international bridges bordering the state of California in the United States, the international bridges Tijuana-San Ysidro (Chaparral), Mesa de Otay-Otay, Tecate-Tecate, Mexicali-Calexico West, Mexicali-Calexico Valle Imperial, Los Algodones-Andrade, the Tijuana-San Ysidro and Mexicali-Calexico railroads, and the Tijuana-San Diego airport pedestrian connection.

In the state of Sonora, Mexico, there is direct connectivity to Arizona, United States, with 10 international bridges: San Luis Río Colorado I and II, Sonoyta-Lukeville, Sasabe-Sasabe, Nogales-Mariposa, Nogales I-Deconcini, Naco-Naco, Agua Prieta-Douglas, the Nogales railroad, and the Nogales II-Deconcini pedestrian bridge.

The Boundary and Water Commission (CILA) states that there are 13 international routes between Chihuahua, Mexico, and Texas, three of which border New Mexico on the U.S. side, the El Berrendo-Antelope Wells, Rodrigo M. Quevedo-Columbus and San Jeronimo-Santa Teresa international bridges.

The rest have connections with the state of Texas, United States, the Del Norte-Santa Fe I and II Railroad, Paso del Norte, Del Buen Vecino, Córdova-Las Américas, Zaragoza-Ysleta, Guadalupe- Tornillo Replacement, Porvenir-Fort Hancock and Ojinaga-Presidio.

In Coahuila, Mexico, the six international communication routes to Texas are the Piedras Negras railroad, Boquillas del Carmen-Rio Grande Village International Bridge, Friendship International Crossing, Ciudad Acuña-Del Rio, Eagle Pass I and II.

On the Mexican side, the state of Nuevo Leon also has a border with the General Bernardo Reyes-Colombia Solidaridad International Bridge in Texas.

Tamaulipas in Mexico is the state with the most international bridges and connections, having 18 that border Texas, such as the Nuevo Laredo III-World Trade International Bridge, the Nuevo Laredo-Laredo railroad, Nuevo Laredo I-Puerta de las Americas, Nuevo Laredo II Juarez-Lincoln, Falcon Dam, Miguel Aleman-Roma, Carmargo-Rio Grande City, Carmargo-Rio Grande City, Eagle Pass I and II, Carmargo-Rio Grande City, Chalan Diaz Ordaz- Los Ebanos, Reynosa-Mission, Reynosa Hidalgo I and II, Reynosa-Pharr, Rio Bravo-Donna, Nuevo Progreso-Progreso, Lucio Blanco-Los Indios Libre Comercio, Matamoros-Brownsville railroad, B&M, Matamoros-Brownsville Puerta Internacional and Matamoros III-International Veterans.

The numbers of a great logistics network

Through these international communication routes, diverse types of merchandise are shipped and exported every day, ranging from foodstuffs to specialized material for industries.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) indicates that more than 70,000 cargo trucks cross every day and that the 10 border states together represent the fourth largest economy in the world; in 2015, for example, this region produced 21% of Mexico's gross domestic product.

The trade corridors are extensive and connect both countries from north to south by road and maritime networks.

The first month of 2023 showed a line of economic growth in terms of cash flow and customs collections.

The one established in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, is positioned as the one with the highest contribution, since only in January it contributed 163 million 985,000 pesos, equivalent to 15.07% of the country, followed by Ciudad Juarez, in Chihuahua, with 33 million 900,000 and Colombia, in Nuevo Leon, with 32 million 800,000 pesos.

In exports and at the end of October 2022, Mexico and the United States totaled 35,605 million dollars; in imports, 24,605 million dollars, and in trade, 60,261 million dollars.

In that year, petroleum oils or bituminous minerals were the main purchase item, followed by petroleum gas, parts or accessories for automotive vehicles, according to the Ministry of Economy.

But the shipment of perishables such as avocado, red fruits and meats also stands out.

The region conformed between Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, and Laredo, Texas, is one of the main in the crossing of merchandise, since 40% of the commercial exchange between Mexico and the United States takes place here, with more than 523.1 billion dollars in imports and exports, with a corridor specialized in automotive supply chain.
