In a major milestone, the Webuild Group, in collaboration with Canadian partners as part of the Mobilinx consortium, has been awarded a substantial €917-million (approximately CAN$1.3-billion) civil construction contract by Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx for the Hurontario Light Rail Transit (HuLRT) project.

The Mobilinx consortium, comprising Webuild, John Laing, Hitachi, Amico, Bot, and Transdev, will undertake the comprehensive responsibilities of designing, building, financing, operating, and maintaining the HuLRT for a 30-year term. This initiative is a key component of Metrolinx's regional transportation plan, "The Big Move," devised in 2008 to address congestion and transit challenges in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.

As part of "The Big Move," the HuLRT joins a lineup of vital projects including the Mississauga Bus Rapid Transit, York Region vivaNext Bus Rapid Transit, Finch West LRT, Union Station Revitalization, Eglinton Crosstown LRT, and the Hamilton LRT, all contributing to a 25-year integrated transportation and transit plan.

Stretching 18 kilometers, the HuLRT will play a crucial role in serving Mississauga's downtown area, connecting with local and express transit services in both Mississauga and Brampton. The project encompasses one station, 19 surface stops, upgrades and commissioning of third-party infrastructure, road resurfacing and widening, construction and modifications of bridges, traffic management, detours, road signing and lighting, parking areas, and a dedicated Building for Operations and Maintenance for the LRT vehicles.

Operating along Hurontario Street from Port Credit in Mississauga to the Brampton Gateway Terminal, the LRT will have a separated guideway with traffic priority across most of the corridor.
