Canada: Latest Data Available
2017 was a record year for Canadian imports of mechanics from Italy (first 9 months), which, with a +32%, jumped to Euro 290 million, surpassing, not only pre-crisis values, but also setting a record in 15 years of Machines Italia sector surveys.
In 2018, total Canadian imports of machinery from our country, referring to the 15 sectors of reference of the project, decreased, in the first 9 months, by 6.23%, compared to the same period of the previous year, dropping to Euro 272 million. A seemingly extremely negative result even when compared to the (slight) decline in Canadian imports of capital goods, -0.36%. Our country's market share also drops from 4.37% in 2017 to 4.12% in 2018 (-5.7%). Italy remains, however, Canada's fifth-largest supplier of machinery and capital technology, preceded in order by the U.S., China, Germany and Japan and followed by Mexico, South Korea, the U.K., Vietnam and France.

Despite the decline, however, 2018 is shaping up to be the second highest result for Italian capital goods Machines Italia.

Echoing the negative Italian trend are the US (-6 percent), China (-1 percent) and Mexico (-2.88 percent). On the other hand, Germany and Japan are on the rise, registering +11% and +19.22%, respectively.
In 2018, Canada purchased from Italy, in order of importance, metalworking machinery and tools, packaging and wrapping machinery, food processing machinery, and plastic and rubber processing machinery, amounting to more than 50 percent of total Italian machinery exports to Canada. Also in terms of Canadian imports of capital goods from Italy, metal processing machinery and agricultural machinery are stable. On the other hand, packaging machinery (-9.6 percent), food machinery (-12.7 percent), woodworking machinery (-12.1 percent) and machinery for the graphic and paper industry (-40.3 percent) lost ground.
All other product categories recorded an increase over the same period last year. Noteworthy is the leap forward in plastic and rubber processing machinery (+9.9%), which doubled its export volumes to Canada from €18 million to almost €36 million in the three-year period 2016-2018.
