Seeking to boost production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in Mexico

During the award ceremony for the competition to accelerate the development of SAFs, held at the Mexico Aerospace Fair, Guillaume Gressin , international vice president of strategy and commercial operations for Airbus Latin America, said that, with the challenge of decarbonization, the good news is that there are solutions and among those solutions are sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs). "And the other good news is that SAFs are really a great development opportunity for Mexico."

That iswhy Airbus, being a pioneer of a sustainable aerospace industry, together with aviation leaders in Mexico, launched a call a year ago for universities and research centers to develop SAF projects in Mexico and for Mexico.

Aviation accounts for between two and three percent of global CO2 emissions and SAF is a key pillar for decarbonization and achieving global ambitions of net zero emissions; it is expected to account for up to 65% of the 2050 target.

In his opportunity, Luis Lizcano, CEO of the Mexican Federation of the Aerospace Industry (Femia), exposed that the idea of the call arose due to the need and challenges present in the industry, so it was essential to involve all parties (Mexican Aerospace Education Council, government and private agencies, airlines and private sector) .

"This is another step forward to demonstrate the capacity and talent of the Mexican workforce," he said.

Jorge Gutiérrez de Velasco, president of Comea, considered that this call should serve as a milestone to detonate an industry around the SAF in the country, for a sustainable air transportation.

"This moment that we provoked a few months ago, should really conclude with a truly sustainable aviation fuel industry in our country and that we push the creation of public policy to support the development of this and other industries that will require this important educational, technological effort and, of course, in terms of the economy of our nation," he said.

The National Polytechnic Institute took first place, followed by the Yucatan Scientific Research Center, and in third place the Ciatec in Leon .
