According to the European Patent Office, applications for additive manufacturing (AM) solutions registered an average annual increase of about 30% in the last decade. The total number of AM requests was six times higher than in other high-technology sec- tors. With a turnover that reached a record- breaking total of 16 billion euro in 2022, AM has its most important markets in the U.S. and in Europe. Italy is among the top 10 with regard to the number of patent applications, and ranks second in the European Union in terms of industrial installations. The results show that Italy has a high potential for the development of AM, which boasts a growing number of applications in a cross section of industries, including pharmaceuticals, healthcare and biomedical engineering, as well as aerospace and transportation, many of which will be showcased at 34.BIMU in Milan.
